Former Nigeria international Odion Ighalo has been backed by Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs.

The 30-year-old player recently extended his loan deal at the English football powerhouse until January 2021.

Ighalo hit the ground running at United after joining the team from his parent club, Shanghai Shenhua in January 2020.

The marksman netted four times in eight competitive matches and United approached Shenhua about extending his loan deal and the two clubs reached an agreement.

Current Wales manager, Giggs, who won a record 13 Premier League titles with United, explained why Ighalo is different from other players at the club.

“He’s different, he’s a centre forward whereas the other players can play out wide,” Giggs told Sky Sports.

“He gives you something extra off the bench when he’s not starting. Centre forwards always want to score goals, he’s done that everywhere he has gone.

“It’s positive that he is able to stay because he has done well. He makes an impact when he’s on the pitch.”

Ighalo is competing with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in the United striking department.

The Red Devils are scheduled to face Tottenham Hotspur on June 19 as the Premier League resumes after being halted by the coronavirus pandemic last March.
