Hajia Alaya calls for effective participation of Women in Sports

Hajia Segilola Alaya, a Board member of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) and Founder of Abruka Queens Football Club has called for the effective participation of women in sports.

Speaking as the Keynote Speaker at the Kwara State Polytechnic SUG Sports Summit on Wednesday January 22, 2025, Hajia Alaya emphasized the need for parents and guardians to support their daughters who are passionate about sports, allowing them to develop careers in the sector and compete on equal footing with their male counterparts.

She highlighted that with the right environment and encouragement from stakeholders, more women can participate in sports, accelerating its development and addressing the gender imbalance in the field.

“In recent years, the landscape of women’s sports in Nigeria has seen significant strides, spurred by a growing recognition of the profound impact that athletics can have on the empowerment and development of women.

“Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage, underscored by the country’s success in events like the Olympics and continental championships, has increasingly embraced female athletes who serve as formidable role models not only on the field but also within society.

She also stressed the importance of grassroots sports infrastructure and facilities, noting that increased female participation in sports serves as a source of empowerment and a tool to combat societal vices among young women.

She highlighted the factors contributing to empowerment to include skill development and confidence, health and well-being, social integration and community building, economic empowerment and breaking stereotypes and cultural norms.

Hajia Alaya added that participation in sports should not affect their education.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to sports development in the state, Hajia Alaya was honored with an award. She dedicated the award to her daughters, Ramat Jumoke Ajike, Sulyman, Rabee Ajike, Mohammed Ayo Abdullahi Alaya.
