HIFL Round 16: Ten men KSU Steelers forced Unilorin Warriors to a draw in Kogi

HIFL third places winners in 2019, Unilorin Warriors began their campaign for this year’s Higher Institutions Football League on Wednesday 14th July 2021 as they were forced to a 1-1 draw against their hosts, at the Kogi State University Stadium, Anyigba in one of Round 16 matches of the Competition.

Abdullahi Ridwan was at his best and produces some great saves as he had to go extra mile to keep out an early six minutes long range shot from Kabir Yusuf for a corner kick.

Fashanu Micheal in his debut opens the scoring account for Unilorin Warriors when Godwin Emmanuel Obagbemiro from the left flank sent in a teasing cross into the six yard box to pick out Fashanu Micheal who wasted no time to scoring with his right foot in to bottom right corner beating Sunday Onuh in goal for KSU to his left to establish a Warriors lead five minutes before the break.

The hosts however, responded and levels the scores at 1-1 when Babatunde Pelumi diving header restored parity for the host.

Both sides grew to neutralise each other and fairly shared possession of the ball going into first half break all leveled.

Second half changes made by Coach Gambari of Unilorin Warriors produces a reinforcement in attack winning the more set pieces from dangerous positions while reducing KSU to only long range shots.

Having scored the equalising goal for Kogi State University in the 42nd minutes of the match, Pelumi Babatunde was full of tears after received his marching orders in injury time when he was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Habeeb Soliu (Ajape) who was replaced by Substitute Ajala Damilola.

No Victor and no vanquished it was at the end of 90 minutes as it ended 1-1. Victor Adamu of KSU Steelers was awarded Man of the Match award.

Both KSU Steelers and Unilorin Warriors have another 90 minutes of action for the return leg match which will eventually determines who goes through to the quarter finals stages of the competition on August 4 at the University of Ilorin Stadium Complex.
