Kwara dominates ‘Mega Boxing Bout’, as association pledges to sustain event

The Chairman of the Kwara State Amateur Boxing Association, Barrister Ahmed Musa Rufai has pledged that his association will not only sustain the Mega Boxing Bout 2021, but will introduce more platforms for the total revival of the sport, especially at the grassroots level.

While expressive delight with the success of the competition held Friday January 1, 2021, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Kwara State Sports Council, the legal luminary praised the standard exhibited by the boxers, even as he commended the coaches.

He said that the association, operating in line with the policy thrust of the government in repositioning sports in the state, decided to introduce the competition to ascertain the level of the state boxers, and to also discover more pugilists.

Barrister Musa said that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq motivated all the Sports Association Chairmen under the Sports Council to do one programme or the other, noted that the association leveraged on the opportunity availed the sporting community to stage a New Year event tagged the ‘Mega Boxing Bout 2021, Another “A for AA 2021’.

The boxing bout had boxers from Kwara state competing against their peers from Oyo, Osun and Lagos states. He said that the event will help keep the boxers on their feet and strong ahead of the Edo National Sports festival.

Ten main bouts and two exhibition bouts characterised the New Year Day event, with Kwara boxers winning eight of the ten contests, while Oyo and Lagos won one each.

The exhibition bouts between Kali Okanlawon and Yusuf Sulaiman, both of Kwara, and that of Okanlawon Lateef of Kwara and Oluwa Damilare from Oyo ended up in draws.

 Musa Taofeeq (kwara) defeated Adeniran Fawas (Oyo) in the 43kg category; Ahmed Sulaiman (Kwara) dismissed Sodiq AbdulRahman (Oyo) in the very first round in the 52kg category, whileSaheed Jamiu (Kwara) won his bout against against Rasheed Ahmed of Oyo state in the 50kg category, with split decision.

Liadi Azeez (56kg) and Shuaib Yakub Omotosho (75kg), both of Kwara state recorded unanimous decisions against Olamoyero Adetunji Semiu of Oyo and Ogundokun Sodiq of Kwara respectively, while AbdulGaniy Yunus Oyewale of Kwars ended the ambition of Oyo’s Kaleb Israel in the 60kg category.

Another interesting and explosive bout between Jimoh Ismaila from Kwara and Rufai Ibrahim Damilare of Osun, in the 69kg category was won by the Kwaran, as Abdullahi Ibrahim (Kwara), in the 81kg category defeated Hammad Adekunle from Oyo state in split decision.

The only female bout of the event was won by a Lagos boxer, Lateef Sofiat, who defeated Tijani Fausiyat of Kwara state in the second round, in the 60 kg category.
