The Kwara state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for adding value to sports development with the introduction of the Kwara State Sports Commission, even as it urged him to appoint credible people to drive the new platform.

Kwara State House of Assembly early this month completed the process that began last year, by passing the Kwara State Sports Commission Amendment Bill 2021 into law after considering the report of the House Committee on Information, Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism.

SWAN equally commended the leadership of the House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, as well as the stakeholders, for participating in the process towards the uplift of the standard of sports in the state.

SWAN, in a statement signed by its Assistant Secretary, Ayodeji Ismail noted that the process can only be classified as worthwhile if credible people who understand sports can be appointed to lay a solid foundation for the Commission, which seeks to reorganise sporting activities in the.

The sports writing body also tasked the House of Assembly to create additional financial window for the management and sustenance of the Commission, by creating legislative framework that will encourage the private sector to fully invest in sports development, to complement government’s commitment.

The administration of sports in Kwara began officially with the establishment of Kwara State Sports Council, through an Edict in 1969, with the responsibility of promoting, encouraging, coordinating and controlling sporting activities in the state.

The Sports Council replaced Sports General Purpose Committee, established in 1968 to manage and develop sports in the state.
