Despite not been budgeted for in the 2021 proposals, Kwara State House of Assembly has confirmed the take off of the Kwara State Sports Commission early next year.

While confirming the development in Offa during the closing ceremony of Honourable’s Cup soccer competition yesterday, the Leader of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Magaji Abubakar Olawoyin said that even though no budget was raised for the Commission, it will take off between January and February 2021.

Hon. Olawoyin, who sponsored the bill to provide for the establishment of Kwara State Sports Commission and for Connected Purposes last year also confirmed that the bill has been signed into law.

The lawmaker from Kwara Central said that he sponsored the bill to revive sports development in the state, adding that it’s introduction will give enough room for improvement, and also, the creation of employment.

He recalled the various successes recorded by the state in sports in the 70s and 80s, a situation which he hoped the introduction of the law will bring back.

‘Kwara had it good in sports in the 70s and 80s, but the development has gone down. The introduction of the Commission will give enough room for improvement, as well as employment. Those are the factors that motivated me in sponsoring the bill’, he averred.

Also complementing his submitions, the Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon. Awolola Ayokunle said that the issue of bureaucracy will be eliminated in the process of having the budget for the Commission next year.

‘The bill was passed last year, but was not captured in the budget. This time, it will, with the issue of bureaucracy eliminated’, he said.

Kwara State Sports Council was established by Edit No 2 in 1976, to supervise and midwife the development of sports in the state.

The introduction of a Commission will raise the bar of sports development, as more money will be thrown into the sector.
