Hopes for Kwara state reviving it’s dominance in swimming at national competitions was rekindled last Saturday, as young swimmers exhibited great skills at the first Ilorin Age Group Swimming Championships, in Ilorin.

The event, held at the Swimming Pool Complex of the George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin was sponsored by Mr. Dokun Oloruntele, a former swimmer, who introduced the platform to give back to the society.

Students from schools and clubs participated in the competition, and they include Adesoye College, Offa, Our Lady Catholic School, Ilorin, Unilorin Secondary School, Ilorin, Aderoju Nursery and Primary School, Ilorin, Harmony Acquatic Club and Stadium Swimming Club.

The competition was coordinated by Dr. Omotola Obajolowo, Dr. Mrs. Tokunbo Obajolowo and the Kwara State Swimming Coach, Coach Ahmed Adebayo.

The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Magaji, while commending sporsor, reiterated government’s resolve to continue to support grassroots sports development.

The Chairman of the Kwara State Swimming Association, Alhaji Usman Yahaya, who is the Proprietor of Focal Point Group of Schools thanked the government and the State Sports Commission for supporting youths and sports development.

He also commended the coordinators, Dr. Omotola Obajolowo, Dr. (Mrs) Tokunbo Obajolowo and the Kwara State Swimming Coach, Coach Ahmed Adebayo for their efforts.

Dr. Omotola Obajolowo in his address, commended the Kwara State government for sponsor the giving the youths, especially the swimming family in the state the opportunity to discover more talents.

He said that the swimmers are talented and courageous, and are showing great understanding of the sport, despite starting not long ago. He saluted their zeal.

Among the classes of events competed are freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
