A member of Kwara State Technical Committee on Covid-19, Dr Joseph Adeyemo has called on sports federations and associations in Nigeria to put to use various recommendations by experts towards containing the pandemic.

Dr Adeyemo, who is the Medical Director of Olutayo Hospital, Ilorin made the call today while presenting a paper titled: ‘Covid-19 and Emerging Challenges in Sporting World’ at a day seminar organised by the Kwara state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

He stressed the need for football stakeholders to use the FIFA relief fund judiciously to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in stadiums, training ground and during competitions.

Dr Adeyemo, who is also the Chairman of Kwara State Basketball Association also called on sports journalist to intensify campaign against the spread of Covid-19, to avoid another lockdown or its accompanying casualties.

He identified nonchalant attitude, expansion of sampling teating, the #EndSars protest and the increase in the awareness for voluntary testing as some of the factors that is causing the new surge in confirmed Covid-19 cases across Nigeria.

While warning all on the need to take precautionary measures, he added that ‘its better to wear a face mask than to wear a ventilator, and that it’s better to sleep in a small room that to sleep in an Isolation Centre’

In his remarks, the Chairman, Kwara SWAN, Jimoh Bashir said Covid-19 has affected the sports sector badly with multi-sports events which had traditionally become the benchmark for gauging performance and also rewarding excellence put on hold.

The Chairman also said the Executive Council, in conjunction with the Kwara state government  and some stakeholders donated food items and money to all members to reduce the hardship occasioned by the pandemic during the lockdown.

Various speakers at the event commended the leadership of SWAN in the state for being proactive in equipping stakeholders in sports sector with emerging issues relating with sports and Covid-19.

The Seminar was graced by journalists, philanthropists, sports associations and bodies, as well government functionaries.
