Team Sokoto today dislodged Team Lagos 25-20 in the final of the male Handball event at the ongoing National Youth Games in Ilorin.

The highly tensed match had a close gap scoreline for most part of the proceedings, but the Sokoto players were more composed than their Lagos counterparts.

Play was stopped at a particular point when the Lagos fans were throwing missiles into the court in protest for what they termed bad officiating.

The Sokoto players, after their deserving victory, retaliated with the same action but it took the effort of security operatives to put the arena under control.

Earlier in the third place match, Team Niger recorded a resounding victory over Team Rivers to win bronze.

Niger was in full control of the match, winning it 30-15 to go home with the bronze medal.

In the Female event, Team Delta beat Team Sokoto 19-18 to win gold and continued their dominance at the Games. Team Lagos won bronze.

In his reaction after the final, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development in Sokoto  state, Hon. Bashir Usman said the the commitment of the state government towards sports development has continued to make the difference.

He commended the players for justifying government’s investment in sports, especially handball, adding that Sokoto state is the home of handball.

The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Shola Aiyepeku, while reviewing the state’s feat after the final said that the state is sticking to its developmental plans, as the athletes are growing through experience.

He charged the Organisers to make available, a definite screening criteria, before any Youth Games, as he faulted the screening process for the ongoing Games.
