Errol Spence may have secured a fight but it’s Manny Pacquiao he really wants.
Though it’s been widely reported Spence will be facing former two-division world champion Danny Garcia in November, the unified welterweight champion got mad after seeing a photo of MP (Manny Pacquiao) Promotions president Sean Gibbons with Keith Thurman on his left and Mikey Garcia on the right.
There’s really nothing wrong with the picture posted by Gibbons on Instagram, it’s the accompanying teasing one-liner that prompted Spence, the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council 147-pound ruler, to react.
The unbeaten Spence (26-0, 21 knockouts), who’s returning to the ring after a horrifying car accident last year, tweeted on July 28.
“If it happens I’m going rogue,” referring to Pacquiao’s possible defense of the World Boxing Association crown against four-division world champion Mikey Garcia.
Spence’s unusual reaction may have stemmed from the fact he shut out Mikey Garcia when they tangled for the IBF title on March 2019, thus making him more deserving of a lucrative unification with Pacquiao, who bested Thurman in their battle for WBA supremacy on July 20, 2019.
Already 41 years old, Pacquiao remains one of the most saleable fighters and a clash with the eight-division world champion guarantees at least twice the amount Spence would get from tangling with Danny Garcia or any other welterweight.
Gibbons, who’s unable to leave his home yet due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has stated earlier Mikey Garcia is the frontrunner in the race toward Pacquiao’s return fight.
Other elite fighters scrambling to face Pacquiao are World Boxing Organization champion Terence Crawford, former world champion Shawn Porter, and Thurman, who’s clamoring for a rematch to avenge his only loss.
