Sue Barker, the winner of the 1976 French Open edition and, currently, a BBC television presenter, claimed that Serena Williams, who seeks the 24th Grand Slam of her career, could be surpassed by Coco Gauff, the Wimbledon wonder who eliminated Venus Williams and became famous for her 2018 run at the All England Club.

Although Sue Barker thinks Serena Williams is the best female tennis player she has ever seen, the BBC presenter pointed out that Coco Gauff has all the weapons to surpass Williams. “She has the ability to be the greatest player ever, even better than Serena and I never thought I’d say that,” said Sue Barker for BBC.

“Serena is without question the best so far. Coco has all the attributes, physically, mentally, she has the game, she’s going to be a superstar, with the press she is so engaging, she has just got absolutely everything.

If she can start winning Grand Slams by 18 then who knows how many she could win. We’re seeing Serena desperately trying to equal Margaret Court’s record [of 24 Grand Slam singles titles] – Coco could outdo that and I never thought that would happen.”

Besides the former French Open champion, Sue Barker, other tennis stars have high hopes in Coco Gauff’s talent. After Venus Williams suffered her second defeat against Gauff at the 2020 edition of the Australian Open, Serena’s older sister declared: “She played well, like I said.

Just played very focused and put a lot of balls in the court. That’s what you have to do. She’ll play well the rest of the event. She clearly wants it, works very hard, is extremely mature for her age. I think the sky’s the limit for her”.

And if that wasn’t enough, John “Superbrat” McEnroe is another prominent tennis figure who stated his admiration for the American 16 years old youngster. “I would be surprised and I don’t say this lightly but I look at her right now, the way she plays, that if she isn’t No 1 in the world by the time she’s 20 years old, I would be absolutely shocked,” McEnroe said on BBC Today after Gauff dismantled Venus at the 2019 Wimbledon edition.
