World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, sat down for an interview with Graham Bensinger, the American journalist and entrepreneur known for his show “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” which has also won an Emmy award.
Djokovic touched upon a number of topics on the show related to his childhood, his career and his family on the show. In this part of the interview, Djokovic says he believes he can win the most grand slams. Also, he reflects on the longevity of his career and whether or not he will still be playing when he turns 40 years old.
Jelena Djokovic, the wife of World No. 1 tennis star Novak Djokovic, says the Serbian tennis player wanted to quit the sport after suffering a bad loss in Miami last year. Djokovic has been beaten by Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in March last year which was after a loss to Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round at Indian Wells.
Speaking in the latest episode of In Depth with Graham Besinger, Jelena said, “He said to me that he’s quitting and that’s the truth. He lost in Miami. It was a terrible loss. And then he just, you know, gathered all of us and said, ‘You know guys, I’m done.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And he goes like, ‘Yeah.”” He said, ‘Edoardo, you can speak with my sponsors.
I want to be clear with them. I don’t know if I’m stopping for six months, a year or forever.’” The interview was conducted prior to the tennis shutdown in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Novak himself said that he realized his happiness had been dependent on his success on the court.
After that, his relationships with his wife and family have become deeper and more significant. “I really feel my relationship became deeper, more significant, more intrinsic. And I realized, actually, up to that moment, that (my) relationship with some of the closest people in my life were quite superficial and shallow, because I just didn’t know how to handle that”, “And that, uh, she, it’s inevitable that she has to endure the same journey as I do at the same time, otherwise we can’t stay together.
And, uh, and, and I’m really grateful and happy that, uh, she embarked on the same journey, her own journey, but parallel at the same time as, as I did.” .
