Guinea-Bissau humble Super Eagles 3–0 in AFCON 2027 Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau today Tuesday September 29, 2026, in their second Group L fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The defeat at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau represents a major setback for Eric Chelle’s side, who had opened their campaign with a 2–1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo four days earlier.

The hosts took control early, with Franculino Djú opening the scoring in the 15th minute. The Guinea-Bissau forward curled a fine effort into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria struggled to respond effectively as the Djurtus defended their advantage and threatened on the counter. Ademola Lookman came closest for the visitors in the first half, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje stood firm.

The Super Eagles went into the break trailing 1–0.

Chelle introduced Moses Simon and Moses Usor after the interval as Nigeria searched for an equaliser, but the changes failed to produce the desired response.

Instead, Guinea-Bissau extended their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé, putting the hosts firmly in command.

Nigeria pushed forward in search of a lifeline, but the Super Eagles were unable to find a way through the disciplined Guinea-Bissau defence.

The night became even more painful for Nigeria in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló scored the third goal in the fifth minute of added time, completing a comprehensive 3–0 victory for the Djurtus.

The result significantly alters the complexion of Group L, where Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria had both entered the encounter with three points after winning their opening matches. Guinea-Bissau had defeated Tanzania 2–0 in their first game, while Nigeria had beaten Madagascar 2–1.

With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are competing for the group’s remaining qualification place.

For the Super Eagles, the defeat will raise questions about their defensive organisation, attacking efficiency and ability to respond under pressure away from home. The three-goal margin also leaves Nigeria with a significant goal-difference deficit in the early stages of the qualifying race.

Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, have announced themselves as serious contenders in Group L with back-to-back victories over Tanzania and Nigeria.

The Super Eagles will now have to regroup quickly, with the remaining qualifying fixtures becoming increasingly important in their bid to secure a place at the 2027 continental showpiece.
