SWAN apologises to Minister over misleading story

The Abuja chapter of the Sports Writers  Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has tendered an apology to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare  over the misleading headline of the cutting of grass at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The Minister had affirmed that he would not spend N81 million to clear grass at the stadium, during the SWAN week in Abuja, which was twisted out of context.

According to the letter signed by the Chairman of Abuja SWAN, Comrade Nduibuisi Chidoka, “On behalf of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Abuja chapter, please accept my deepest apologies for the mistake in respect to the erroneous publication by the Daily Trust reporter Mr. Jide Olushola.

Whether the infraction or misrepresentation was intentional or not, as an association, we can understand how upsetting this whole situation has been for you and I can promise you that we have taken all the necessary measures to ensure this does not happen again.

If there was any good that came out of the unfortunate story is that the reporter in question has tendered an apology with the hope that a retraction will also be written to that effect.

“In as much as I have developed alternative approaches to such situations, Sir, please feel free to let me know of your thoughts and concerns over this matter. It’s important to me that you rely on us as you have always had in the past.I hope you will accept our sincerest apologies”, Chidoka concluded
