*Appreciates Mogaji, Thuraya for tremendous support
Chairman of Kwara United Queens Football Club, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Owolabi Wopa, has dedicated the club’s historic YSFON POWA U-17 Girls’ Cup triumph to Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the First Lady of the state, Professor Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq.
The Courageous Queens secured their first-ever silverware since the club’s establishment in February 2026, after defeating Model Queens 4-0 in the final played at the KFA Pitch, George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin, yesterday Tuesday September 1, 2026..
Speaking with journalists after the emphatic victory, Wopa expressed his delight at the historic achievement, attributing the success to Almighty Allah.
“To be sincere with my conscience and my God, I think I am the happiest person today. I want to give the glory to Almighty Allah for making it possible.”
The Kwara United Queens Chairman noted that the victory provided a perfect response following the team’s disappointment at the recently concluded NWFL Nationwide competition in Aba, Abia State, where they narrowly missed out on promotion to the NWFL Championship.
“It is interesting to know that I just came back from Aba, Abia State, where we went for the NWFL Championship playoff.
Unfortunately, we came back with third position, so this makes me the happiest person today. I came, saw and conquered.”
Wopa described the triumph as a significant milestone for the young club and dedicated the trophy to Governor AbdulRazaq and the First Lady for their tremendous support towards the development of female football in the state.
“This is the first trophy since the inception of this club.
This is the first trophy we won, and we dedicate this trophy to His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the First Lady, Professor Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, for their tremendous support, both financially and morally, to develop the young girls.”
Speaking about the challenges of managing a female football club compared to a male team, Wopa admitted that the difference is enormous.
According to him, managing a male team is more professional and mature, while handling a female team comes with its own unique challenges and requires greater attention.
He, however, said the experience has provided him with valuable lessons as an administrator, stressing that Kwara United Queens remain a young club with plenty of room for growth.
He lauded the organizer, Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria YSFON for introducing the female category, noting that it will aid female football at the grassroots.
Wopa also expressed appreciation to the Kwara State Government and football stakeholders for their support throughout the competition.
“By extension, I thank the Executive Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Executive Chairman, Kwara Sports Commission, Mallam Bolakale Adisa Mogaji; and the Chairman, Kwara Football Association, Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya, for their support and assistance in getting this far in the competition.”
The final saw Shittu Mariam, Yunusa Mariam, Modupe Owoosho and Abdulafeez Kafilat find the back of the net as the Courageous Queens cruised to a convincing 4-0 victory over Model Queens.
The YSFON POWA U-17 Girls’ Cup success also represents a perfect response from the young side following their near-miss in Aba and gives the club its first major piece of silverware, adding a memorable chapter to its brief but promising history.
Meanwhile, the Head Coach of Kwara United Queens, Abdullahi Ganiyu, has expressed delight following his side’s historic triumph in the YSFON POWA Cup.
The Courageous Queens emerged champions of the competition after cruising to a convincing 4-0 victory over Model Queens on Tuesday, securing the club’s first-ever silverware since its establishment in February 2026.
Speaking after the encounter, Ganiyu described the triumph as the beginning of greater things for the young club, expressing happiness that the team was able to achieve a major milestone within a short period.
“This is just the beginning of good things for the club.”
The coach, fondly called Coach Uwe, gave thanks to Almighty Allah for the victory, appreciating the club’s Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Owolabi Wopa, for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the team.
“First and foremost, I give thanks to Almighty Allah for giving us the glory and victory in this match.
“Secondly, I really appreciate the chairman of the club for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach. You see, the club only started in February this year, and we are happy to win our first major trophy.”
Uwe also commended the players and members of the technical crew for their commitment and hard work throughout the competition.
He extended his appreciation to the medical and media teams, backroom staff, management and the club’s supporters for their contributions towards the historic achievement.
