Kwara State Scrabble Association has concluded arrangements to stage the 2nd edition of Closed Scrabble tournament, between Friday December 19th and Saturday December 20th, 2020.
The tournament, tagged 2nd Kwara Closed Scrabble Tournament, and which is expected to attract huge cash prizes, will hold at the Conference Room of the Kwara State Sports Council.
The tournament will begin from 10am each day.
Interested contestants are expected to register with the sum of N2, 000. Other accompanying requirements for registration include nose masks and hand sanitizers, scrabble board and tiles, as well as scrabble timer.
Briefing newsmen in Ilorin, the Chairman of the association, Mr. Olumayowa Kabir Aliyu said that the basic essence of the competition was to assess the strength of the existing players, and to discover new ones.
Discussing the past, present and future of scrabble in the state, Mr. Aliyu said that the competition was introduced to know the current realities, based on what happened in the past, adding that new players will be discovered next year through schools competitions.
‘We are planning to visit secondary schools by the first quarter of 2021, to introduce ‘catch them young’ programme, in a bid to introduce the young ones to the basics of the game’, he said.
He also added that the Retreat, which holds every Sunday at Olufoda Resort and Hotels Limited will continue, even as he called on other clubs and individual players to join the advancement of Scrabble through the retreat.
He also commended all those that are contributing to the development of the game, especially the upcoming competition.
