MINILS opens 40 years aniversary activities with sporting events

Staffers of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS) have been charged to take flexibility exercises as part of their daily routine as a way of enhancing healthy living.

The Director-General of the Institute, Comrade Issa Aremu, made the call during the keep fit exercise introduced as part of the activities to celebrate MINILS’ 40 yeras aniiversary, held this morning at the football pitch of the Institute.

After observing the over 25 minutes of of flexibility and endurance exercises coordinated by Coach Niyi of the Kwara State Athletics Association alongside management members and staffers of the Institute, Comrade Aremu commended and congratulated them for sustaining the mandate of the Institute established in 1983.

“Apart from the sporting activities and other events lined up to celebrate the Institute, we have also penciled down Resource Persons that will deliver lecture on MINILS’ yesterday, today and tomorrow, which is all aimed at celebrating how far we have come in actualizing our mandate of excellence in labour education”, he stressed.

Comrade Aremu, it would be recalled, re-introduced sporting activities and monthly keep fit exercise when he resumed at the MINILS, with all sports facilities at the Institute renovated and put into use. He also purchased and launched sports facilities and kits.

While delivering lecture on hypertension, as well as the dangerous acts after meals, Pharmacist Lanre Alege said that with recent estimate, about 600 million people worldwide have High Blood Pressure (hypertension), with about 7.1 million deaths every year, as a direct result of hypertension.

While pointing out that hypertension could be mild, moderate, severe, or very severe based on the value of systomic and diastolic blood pressure, he listed some of the causes as hereditary, high salt intake, stress, smoking, overweight and lack of exercise, among others.

He recommended adequate measurements of blood pressure, regular checkups, eating lots of fruits, and avoidance of high alcohol consumption as some of the numerous remedies at checking High Blood Pressure.

On his second lecture on dangerous acts after meals, he advised against eating fruits and drinking of tea immediately after meals. Other acts that he recommended should be avoided are: sleeping immediately after meal, bathing, smoking, walking about and loosing of belt.
