An Olympian, and Founder,, Champions’ Path Athletics Academy, Durotoye Adetoyi has expressed hope that Team Nigeria will perform and break new records at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.
The Ex-Professional Athlete and World Athletics Certified Coach spoke to journalists, as he also analysed the chances of some of the athletes in the Games.
“With the calibre of young athletes currently representing Nigeria around the world, I believe we have a strong chance of coming out in flying colours, particularly in the sprint events”, the High Performance Sprint Coach and Lecturer averred.
“Athletes like Kanyinsola Ajayi have demonstrated exceptional form. He won the NCAA title impressively, ran a personal best of 9.84 seconds, and announced himself on the Diamond League circuit with a remarkable victory over the reigning Olympic and World Champion. Those are the performances of an athlete ready to compete for major international titles.
In the Men’s 100m, we also have Favour Ashe, who won the Nigerian National Trials with another sub-10-second performance. In the 400m, Samuel Ogazi has consistently ran in the 43-second range and also claimed the NCAA title, proving he is among the world’s elite quarter-milers.
“On the Women’s side, Nigeria remains equally competitive. Rosemary Chukwuma, Blessing Ogundiran, and Favour Ofili continue to perform at a high level in both the 100m and 200m. In the hurdles, Tobi Amusan, the world record holder, remains one of Nigeria’s brightest medal hopes. Athletes of her calibre are always capable of delivering on the biggest stage.
Historically, Nigeria has never produced a Commonwealth Games Men’s 100m champion. However, after watching Kanyinsola Ajayi’s recent performances, I genuinely believe the time has come to rewrite that history. I also believe our Men’s 4×100m relay team has the quality to challenge for gold, especially with the experienced and dedicated coaches guiding these athletes.
“In my opinion, this is Nigeria’s year. We have a talented generation of athletes, experienced coaches, and the depth needed to compete with the very best. I am optimistic that Team Nigeria will make the nation proud and return home with multiple medals in athletics.
