NWFL Board member, Hajia Alaya celebrates women in sports on International Women’s Day

Board member of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Hajia Segilola Alaya has saluted women in sports, especially in football, in commemoration of the International Women’s Day 2025, which was celebrated globally today, Saturday March 8, 2025.

International Women’s Day 2025 is being celebrated globally today, Saturday, March 8, under the campaign theme “Accelerate Action.”

The campaign theme emphasises the urgent need to take decisive steps toward achieving gender equality, addressing the slow pace of progress, and empowering women and girls worldwide.

Hajia Alaya, who is the Chairperson, Kwara State FA Football Development Committee as well as Founder and Matron, Abruka Queens FC of Ilorin greet all female athletes, players and officials, especially in the Nigeria Women Football League, for their sacrifice and resilience.

She is also the Founder and President of Marvellous Assembly Social Forum.

In consonance with the world’s accepted standard, Hajia Alaya aligned with the fact that “by supporting initiatives that empower women and challenge discrimination, women can collectively accelerate the journey toward a more equitable world.

The roots of international Women’s Day trace back to the early 20th century during labour movements. In 1908, around 15,000 women marched in New York City, demanding better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights.

The first official International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. By 1975, the United Nations officially recognised March 8 as International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day is the celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It raises awareness about ongoing gender inequalities, advocate for equal rights and opportunities for women globally.

Hajia Alaya commend, congratulates and celebrates all women and girls who are making positive contributions in all works of life, and raising the bar in their mission against the men.

Hajia Alaya was in 2022, recognised as Female Soccer Ambassador award by Miss Football Nigeria, which allows her to be addressed as Ambassador Rukayat Segilola Alaya.
