Wheelchair Basketball workshop ends in Ilorin as Magaji calls for more funding for sports

The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bolakale Adisa Magaji has lamented the withdrawal of subvention to Sports Federations as it used to be, adding that the move has impeded funding of sports development.

While speaking at the closing ceremony of the national technical workshop for Wheelchair Basketball Coaches and Officials at the Conference Room of the Kwara State Sports Commission in Ilorin yesterday, Thursday February 22, 2024, he said that the trend would need to be reversed, for sports to grow as expected.

He said that for sports to develop as expected, and for the Federations to have the capacity to implement their various programmes, both at the national and international levels, more money needs to be pumped into sports.

He commended the President and Board members of Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria (WBFN) for introducing the workshop, which was staged ahead of the Wheelchair Basketball National League to be sponsored by BetKing.

The President of the wheelchair basketball federation of Nigeria, Oluwaseyi Johnson expressed fulfilment with the workshop, which he says, was a precusor to the forthcoming Wheelchair Basketball National League.

Johnson, who expressed satisfaction with the attitude of the participants noted that the federation will not relent in organizing more beneficial programs and clinics for its officials to further expose them to new rules in the sport.

He reiterated the commitment of the federation to debut Wheelchair Basketball League in Africa, which will be in three phases: the Savannah and Atlantic Conferences, which will be played withing seven weeks, from where teams will qualify for the national finals.

“Betking Wheelchair Basketball League is a National League for all the states, and it might be state or club representatives.

The President commended the Kwara State government through the Sports Commission for its investment in sports development, stating that the federation will organize a Wheelchair Basketball program upon completion of upgrading of the Indoor Sports Hall.

The event also featured presentation of certificate to all the participants from across the federation.
