*The Veteran behind the scenes

Dr. Bode Alli Durotoye, is one of the figures and veteran sports administrator, technocrat and international sports official whose involvement in KWAFEST brings to the festival a wealth of experience accumulated over more than four decades.

Beyond medals being won, records being created and broken, celebrations of the men and women working quietly behind the scenes characterising the Games christened KWAFEST 2026, are the drivers of the process and processes, professionally.

Spotlight are obviously and naturally not on athletes who conquered the podium, the coaches who moulded champions, and the officials whose decisions helped produce a successful festival, but on the Veterans, who include Dr. Bode Durotoye.

For Durotoye, participation in the Games is not simply another assignment. It represents another opportunity to contribute to the development of sports, particularly at the grassroots level, after spending a substantial part of his professional life building systems and supporting athletes and sports federations at different levels.

Born in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Durotoye’s academic and professional journey has been firmly rooted in sports. His educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in Sports Management from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Lagos and a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

His career within Nigeria’s sports administration structure is particularly impressive.

At the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, he rose through the ranks from Principal Sports Officer to Assistant Chief Sports Officer, Chief Sports Officer, Assistant Director, Deputy Director and eventually Director of Sports, a position he held from 2020 to 2022.

That progression was built on years of practical experience across virtually every important layer of sports administration.

He served as Zonal Coordinator of the NSC in the North-East, North-Central and North-West zones, worked in planning, monitoring and information, grassroots sports development, federation and elite athletes administration, and also headed the Sports Centre of the NSC in Port Harcourt.

It is this depth of experience that makes his role at KWAFEST 2026 particularly valuable.

A Sports Festival of this magnitude requires much more than enthusiasm. It demands planning, coordination, technical understanding, discipline, institutional memory and an appreciation of how sporting competitions can be used to identify and nurture future champions.

Durotoye has operated in all these areas.

Long before becoming one of the senior figures in the national sports administration system, he had already established himself within Nigerian sports federations. He served as Secretary General of the Nigeria Chess Federation from 1992 to 1998, Assistant Secretary General of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) from 1998 to 2001, Secretary General of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation from 2005 to 2009 and Secretary General of the Five and Para-Soccer Federation of Nigeria from 2009 to 2010.

His experience has also taken him beyond Nigeria.

Durotoye was a member of Nigeria’s contingent to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and subsequently served in several capacities as Team Manager, delegate, head delegate and camp commandant for Nigerian teams at continental and international competitions.

His international assignments include the World Chess Olympiad in Moscow, the Africa Chess Championship in Cairo, the All Africa Games, the Africa Junior Athletics Championship, international volleyball competitions and Olympic qualification events.

Perhaps even more remarkable is his record as an official.

A FIDE International Arbiter since 1997, Durotoye participated in the 34th World Chess Olympiad in Moscow as an invited international arbiter and later served as Chief Arbiter at the 9th World University Chess Championship in Lagos in 2007.

His sporting education has equally been complemented by several professional courses, including an IAAF Level 1 Officiating Course in Athletics, a national arbiter/tournament director course in chess, sports development seminars and a management programme at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

All of these experiences now converge at KWAFEST.

As a member of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Durotoye represents the valuable category of veterans whose contribution may not always be measured in medals but whose knowledge helps provide the structure within which the athletes can compete.

His presence also gives the festival a connection to the long history of sports administration in Kwara and Nigeria.

For a new generation of athletes, coaches and officials participating in KWAFEST 2026, people like Durotoye provide something that cannot be acquired overnight: institutional memory.

They have seen sports evolve. They have witnessed successes and failures. They understand the demands of organising competitions, managing teams, administering federations and developing athletes. Most importantly, they understand that sustainable sports development is a process rather than a single event.

Durotoye’s own professional work has included grassroots sports development, and his publications have examined sports policy implementation and effective management of sports in Nigeria.

That background makes his presence at a state sports festival especially fitting.

KWAFEST is, at its core, about discovering, developing and showcasing talent. It is about giving young athletes a platform and creating a pathway from grassroots participation to higher levels of competition.

For Durotoye, therefore, the festival offers another opportunity to serve the same cause to which he has devoted much of his professional life.

The medals will eventually be packed away. The competitions will come to an end. The athletes will return to their various homes and clubs, but the experience shared, the talents discovered and the structures strengthened during KWAFEST 2026 could influence Kwara sports for many years to come.

And among those helping to make that possible is a veteran who has spent decades serving Nigerian sports.

Dr. Bode Alli Durotoye may be working behind the scenes at KWAFEST 2026, but his fingerprints are part of the larger story of a festival designed to build the future of Kwara sports.
