The atmosphere in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State has been buzzing with excitement as the 2025 edition of the Oyun Chairman’s Cup, organized by the Oyun Football Council, under the dynamic leadership of its Chairman, Alhaji S. A. Fowomola, enters its decisive stages.
The competition is being sponsored by Oyun Local Government, under the Executive Chairman, Hon. Chief Kamar Olanrewaju Akanbi.
The grassroots championship, which has drawn teams from across the length and breadth of the Local Government Area, has been celebrated for its high level of competition, improved organization, and renewed sense of community pride.
This year’s tournament, just like the previous ones, will not only showcase emerging football talents, but also reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to repositioning football development at the grassroots.
The competition is the highest in hierarchy of football championship at the local government level, just as the Governor’s Cup at State level and President Federation Cup at National level, as approved by FIFA, the world football governing body.
This year’s edition is on a knockout basis because of time constraints. The competition started on the Thursday, December 4, 2025, and the 11 teams representing each Ward were divided into two (2) Zones, Odo- Ogun and Oke-Ogun Zones.
The Secretary of the Local Government, Hon Richard Agboola performed the ceremonial kick-off, to get the tournament on the way.
In Odò-Ogún Zone are Irra, Igbonna, Aho/Inaja, Erin-Ile North, Ilemona and Erin-Ile South. Ikotun, Ijagbo, Ipee and Igosun are playing from Oke-ogun Zone.
In the matches played so far,
Irra Ward and Igbonna played out a 3-3 draw, and Irra won 5-4 on penalties, to qualify for the next round. Erin-Ile North walked-over Aho/Inaja to qualify, while Ilemona defeated Erin-Ile South 4-1.
Speaking on the tournament’s progress, Alhaji Fowomola expressed satisfaction with the high level of participation and discipline displayed by the teams. He noted that the competition is part of the Council’s broader vision to harness young talents and create a sustainable football culture within the Local Government Area.
“This tournament is more than just football; it is about unity, engagement, and building a platform for our youths to shine,” Fowomola said.
“We are committed to improving the standard every year and ensuring that Oyun becomes a reference point for grassroots football development in Kwara State.”
Stakeholders have commended the Council for restoring vibrancy to the local football scene, citing the smooth organization, timely scheduling of matches, and the introduction of improved officiating standards as key highlights.
With the knockout stages still ongoing, fans are eagerly anticipating the emergence of new stars and the crowning of a champion that will write its name in the history of the Oyun Chairman’s Cup. As excitement continues to soar, many believe this year’s edition has already set a new benchmark for future tournaments.
