*As new Football Council Executives emerge across 16 LGAs
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee for the Kwara State Football Association (Kwara FA) Local Football Councils Elections, Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, FIFA (Rtd), has described the election held today, Tuesday August 25, 2026 ,as peaceful and smooth, with no controversy recorded.
The election, held at the Alhaji Usman Mustapha Football House in Ilorin, attracted delegates from all 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara State, where they elected executives who will pilot the affairs of football at the local level for the next three years.
Speaking with journalists during the exercise, Obafemi, an experienced football administrator, said the calm atmosphere surrounding the election represented a significant improvement over the previous exercise, which he described as tumultuous.
“It has been very quiet, with no controversy. The last one was very tumultuous, but this time everybody seems to be coming unopposed. Whether they are opposed or unopposed, there must be an electoral system,” Obafemi said.
He stressed that elections at the Local Football Council level were fundamental to the development and administration of the sport, insisting that football governance must follow a structured process from the grassroots to the national level.
According to him, adherence to the electoral process and relevant laws remains essential to ensuring credibility and legitimacy in football administration.
“The election is fundamental and it is an adherence to the law. You have to take it from the local Councils to the state and to the nation before we can be talking of FIFA,” he said.
The former Registrar of the University of Ilorin and CAF Instructor also commended the leadership of the Kwara State Football Association under Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya for demonstrating commitment to grassroots football governance by conducting the Local Council elections.
He noted that not all states in the country were currently following the same process.
“It is as if only Kwara State is taking it from the grassroots like we are doing now. Many other states are not doing this, but what we are doing is strict adherence to the law so that no one will say we are not obeying the law,” he added.
Following the exercise, new executives emerged to oversee football administration and development across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state for the next three years.
