There was widespread jubilation across Kwara state’s football community, following the approval by Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki for the appointment of former club player, Abdulrahman Bashir as the club’s Trainer.
The appointment also comes with an offer to sponsor his coaching course at the National Institute for Sports (NIS).
News broke out during the week that the former goal poacher engages in gatekeeping job, after his playing career.
Fans, stakeholders and grassroots football lovers have described the decision as timely and symbolic, noting that it reflects a commitment to rewarding loyalty and reintegrating former players into the system after their active playing careers.
Abdulrahman Bashir, a familiar face to supporters for his years of service as a dedicated player, is known for his discipline, humility and strong connection with fans. His new role as a Trainer is seen as a practical way of keeping him engaged in football administration.
Bashir previously captained ABS Ilorin FC and had a playing career that included spells with Enyimba FC, Lobi Stars, Nasarawa United, Wikki Tourists, Sunshine Stars and Plateau United. He was also in the Nigeria U-23 National Team and CHAN Eagles, and travelled to Europe for professional trials.
Speaking on the development, the club’s Director of Football, Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka, the Nwachigoziri 1, said the appointment sends a strong message that football is not just about what happens on the pitch, but also about taking care of those who once gave their best for the game.
“This is more than a job; it is recognition. Bashir served the club with pride, and today he is being remembered. That is how football should be,” he said.
Stakeholders praised Senator Saraki for consistently showing interest in the welfare of sportsmen and women in Kwara, adding that such gestures boost morale and encourage young players to believe that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.
“This is another example of how sports can create a lifelong pathway. When former players are absorbed into the system, it strengthens loyalty and continuity,” Chukwuemeka noted.
He added that the decision aligns with the vision of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki to use football as a platform for youth empowerment and talent development.
Abdulrahman Bashir, who joined ABS FC from the time it was known as Bukola Babes FC, was visibly emotional after the announcement, thanked Senator Saraki and the club management for the opportunity, promising to discharge his duties with dedication and integrity.
The appointment has been welcomed as a positive step toward building a football culture in Kwara State where service, loyalty and contribution are rewarded both on and off the field.
