NPFL: Kwara United halts Remo Stars’ unbeaten run, secures first win

Kwara United Football Club secured its first win in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, and also did so by ending Remo Stars’ unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory in a tricky match decided at the Main-Bowl of the Kwara State Stadium Complex, Ilorin today, Sunday October 6, 2024.

Kwara United dominated the first half, with Akanni Akeem, Junior Aimufa, Yahaya Ibrahim and Shola AbdulRaheem relentlessly attacking Remo Stars’ defense.

Despite their efforts, the first half ended goalless, as the goalkeeper of the visitors made several crucial saves to keep them in the game.

In the second half, Kwara United’s persistence paid off, as Shola AbdulRaheem scored through a solo effort in the 56th minute, sending fans into wide jubilation. 

Remo Stars were reduced to ten men after Faisal Sanni was shown a red card, after a second yellow card in the game, for a dangerous tackle on Junior Aimufa. 

Kwara United’s defender, Olaniyi Saheed, almost caused a scare, after being struck by a powerful shot, but medics from both teams revived him. He was however, forced out, despite insisting on continuing in the game.

Coach Daniel Ogunmodede of Remo Stars in his post match interview, acknowledged his team’s poor performance against the home team.

Remo Stars entered the encounter with superior bragging right, after winning all four previous matches in the season, and were favourites ahead of the crucial encounter.

Kwara United didn’t win a match out of three played prior to Remo Stars’ match, and the Chief Coach, Ashifat Suleiman praised his players’ resilience, after securing the first win of the season. 

Kwara United will next face Abia Warriors in Umuahia in Matchday Six.
