Kwara State again took the national sporting spotlight as the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) conferred national honours on some of its most accomplished sports administrators, journalists, and athletes for their remarkable contributions to sports development in Nigeria.
Top on the list of the awardees is the State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his tremendous transformation of Sports in the state and Nigeria.
Other honourees are the Chairman of Kwara United Football Club, Kumbi Titiloye; Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka, Director of Football at Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC; Hon. Idris Musa Abdullahi (Thuraya), Chairman of the Kwara State Football Association; celebrated sports journalist Bayour Issah; veteran broadcaster and former Olympian Hameed Adio; and Taiwo Awoniyi, the Nottingham Forest striker and Super Eagles forward.
The honours, part of SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee National Awards, will be conferred at a grand ceremony on Saturday, October 31, 2025, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, marking six decades of the association’s commitment to promoting excellence and integrity in Nigerian sports.
According to an official letter addressed to Kumbi Titiloye, SWAN’s national leadership stated that the conferment was “in recognition of your contributions towards our national sports promotion and development within the cycle of the last six decades.”
Titiloye, an Oro-born football administrator and a board member of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) representing the North Central Zone, has built an impressive legacy of stability and growth at Kwara United Football Club.
Under his leadership, the Harmony Boys have maintained their NPFL status for six consecutive seasons, returned to continental competition twice, winning the President Federation Cup for the first time, and establishing a model of professionalism admired across the Nigerian football landscape.
Similarly, Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka (The Nwachigoziri 1), has distinguished himself as a foremost voice in football management and communication. Through his stewardship at ABS FC and active engagement with football reforms, he has mentored young administrators and nurtured talents who have blossomed into national stars.
For Hon. Idris Abdullahi Musa (Thuraya), Chairman of the Kwara State Football Association, the honour reaffirms his influence in repositioning grassroots football in the state. His collaboration with the state government and local clubs has strengthened the player development pipeline and elevated the state’s football reputation nationwide.
The recognition extended to sports media icons, Bayour Issah and Hameed Adio underscores the pivotal role of journalism in sports development.
Bayour Issah, a veteran of international sports coverage, has mentored generations of journalists, while Adio, an Olympian and respected broadcaster, has used his platform to champion fair play, discipline, and youth inclusion in sports.
Taiwo Awoniyi, who rose from the dusty fields of Ilorin to the global stage in England’s Premier League, represents the new face of Kwara’s sporting excellence, a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes across the country.
Reacting to the development, Dare Kuti, Secretary of SWAN’s Kwara State chapter, praised the national body for “getting it right in recognizing the true pillars of sports governance from Kwara.”
According to him, “this award speaks to the fact that Kwara remains a model of sports development under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who has consistently supported infrastructure renewal and the empowerment of administrators and athletes alike.”
Also speaking, Nicholas Uwerunonye, Treasurer of SWAN, Kwara chapter, said the award highlights the synergy between sports journalists and administrators in driving the state’s sports vision.
“These honourees represent the full ecosystem of sports, from policy and management to media and athletic excellence. It’s a statement that the sports community in Kwara is united, focused, and thriving,” he said.
On his part, Jimoh Bashir, former Chairman of SWAN in Kwara State, described the recognition as “a proud moment that validates years of consistent effort.”
He commended the national body of SWAN for acknowledging individuals whose work has shaped sports policy and inspired new generations.
“This honour reflects reality, these are people who have built the foundation of modern sports administration in Kwara. It’s also a tribute to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s enabling environment, which has repositioned sports as a vital tool for youth engagement and economic growth,” Bashir added.
Across the state, the announcement has sparked excitement among fans, athletes, and journalists alike.
