Super Eagles of Nigeria player, Taiwo Awoniyi has mobilised resources aimed at completing the abandoned sports media centre and secretariat of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter.
The Vice Chairman of Kwara SWAN, Mallam Toyin Saheed gave the hint during his visit to the uncompleted building at the Kwara State Stadium on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of Mallam Ayodeji Ismail, Chairman Kwara SWAN; Mallam Saheed revealed that the site Engineer, Timilehin Oroye has been given the marching order to complete before September 2024.
He said the various meetings held with the former U17 football star is becoming a reality.
The veteran broadcaster said, “I want to confirm to the world that Super Eagles star, Taiwo Awoniyi has given the marching order for the construction of SWAN abandoned secretariat.
“The Engineer visited the site this morning (Wednesday) on the order to the Nottingham Forest Star and work has commenced with immediate effect. By the Grace of Allah (the creator of heaven and earth), our next Congress will be held in our building”.
“Many thanks to Taiwo Awoniyi for fulfilling his promise in the construction of the SWAN secretariat. The leadership of Kwara SWAN met with the former Liverpool player last year (2023) and this year, where he reminded us that he has not forgotten his commitment to the association”, he added.
Saheed lauded the Vice President North Central SWAN, Mallam Olayinka Owolewa for playing a vital role in ensuring Taiwo Awoniyi keeps in touch with sports Writers in Kwara State.
He said, “Our Vice President, Mallam Olayinka Owolewa has been one of the major promoters of Kwara SWAN since he became the handler of Taiwo Awoniyi.
“The Ayodeji Ismail led Kwara SWAN have enjoyed a smooth relationship with Taiwo Awoniyi and Kwara SWAN gets all the necessary attention and support whenever Awoniyi is in town.
“We also want to commend our predecessors (past Kwara SWAN executives) for ensuring this current administration has a foundation to build on”
Saheed called on relevant sports stakeholders in Kwara State and beyond not to neglect the role of the media in the promotion of sporting activities.
“SWAN is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and all we do is promote sporting activities. It is necessary for them to continue partnering with SWAN. We will continue to do our best in promoting sporting activities in the state”.
Earlier, building materials and workers were seen moving to the site of the abandoned facility with Engineer Timilehin Oroye, project manager of Awoniyi.
According to Engineer Timilehin, his team hopes to work non-stop till the project is completed.
“God willing, we intend to complete the project in a month,” he said.
