The Chairman of Kwara United Queens Football Club, Alhaji AbdulRazaq Owolabi Agbaji Wopa, has hailed the maiden Nigeria Women’s Pre-Season Football Championship as a transformative initiative poised to elevate the women’s game in the country.

The historic tournament, currently taking place in Ilorin, Kwara State, is proudly organised by Ultimate Sports Consult, in conjunction with the State Sports Commission, and supported by Enact Hub, in honour of the Kwara State First Lady, Ambassador Mrs. Olufolake AbdulRazaq.

It is aimed at boosting female participation in football while creating viable career pathways and employment opportunities for aspiring women footballers across Nigeria.

Speaking after the opening day of action, Alhaji Wopa described the championship as a resounding success, noting the high level of competition and quality on display.

“From what I witnessed on the opening day, this is a fiercely competitive tournament with impressive talent across all teams. I see a very bright future for women’s football in Nigeria.

“These players are disciplined, hardworking, and determined. What we are seeing here is no coincidence, the quality is genuine,” he stated.

The Kwara United Queens boss also expressed delight at the performance of his team, who marked their debut with an emphatic 4-1 victory.

“I am extremely proud of the performance delivered by my team in their first match. Considering that this is a newly assembled squad, their cohesion and confidence are remarkable. That result is a strong indication that this team has a promising future ahead,” he added.

Alhaji Wopa further extended appreciation to stakeholders, organizers, and dignitaries who graced the opening ceremony, acknowledging their collective efforts in bringing the vision to life.

“I commend everyone who has contributed to making this initiative a reality. The turnout has been impressive, and it reflects the growing interest in women’s football. I wish all the participating teams and players the very best and a successful, injury-free tournament,” he concluded.

Among those that graced the colourful opening ceremony are Dr. Mrs. Mercy Olufunke Shittu, the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare and Acring. Head of Service, Hon. Mariam Aladi, the Executive Chairman of the State Sports Commission, who was represented by the Secretary, Haruna Tsado, the Director of Sports, Mallam Hamidu Olówó, Chairman of Kwara FA, Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya and former Directors of Sports, Mallam Tunde Kazeem and Mallam Ibrahim Bako.

Others are Alhaji Ayinla Agaka, Alhaji Gesinde Amosa Fregene, among others.
