Clash of IGCs: Ilorin Golf Club takes early lead ahead of final day

*As Captains praise atmosphere

Ilorin Golf Club is in early lead in the Inter-Club Matchplay between it and Ikeja Golf Club, tagged “Clash of the IGCs”, holding at the Ilorin Golf Club, Ilorin.

The competition, which teed-off today with the Doubles Matchpay Format, saw the hosts bagging 9 and a half points against 6 and a half points by Ikeja Golf Club, and will enjoy the 3 points advantages ahead of the Singles Matchplay Format tomorrow.

Led by it’s Captain, AbdulRasheed Adebisi, Ikeja Golf Club stormed Ilorin with two professionals and 29 players, who include the Vice Captain, Segun Odunnuga and two of the former Captains of the Club.

While speaking with sportsbash.com.ng, the Captain of the Club formed in 1968, AbdulRasheed Adebisi said that the inter-club competition is more of the promotion and encouragement of unity and togetherness among members.

“It’s a normal competition between clubs, to familiarise with ourselves. This is the first time we are having this with Ilorin Golf Club.

“The aim was to make friends, create peace and awareness, and not necessarily about winning. Golf brings people together, and we make friends, enjoy ourselves. Golf is life. It’s the only game you can play irrespective of age, as you can play even when you clock age 80.

While corroborating his Ikeja Golf ub counterpart, the Captain of Ilorin Golf Club, Jide Allen said that the inter-club matchplay was meant to strengthen ties between clubs.

Allen led Kwara team that has a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT), Pharmacist Layi Miliki, two former Captains, Ganiyu Lambo and Lukman Yahaya, and others.

“This is not the first time Ilorin Golf Club under my Captainship is engaging in inter-club competitions, as we have done so with Benin Golf Club in Benin in May this year, and are also planning to honour the invitations of Warri, Dolphins and Ogbomoso Golf Clubs very soon.

“This is the first time we are engaging with Ikeja Golf Club. It’s a welcomed development, and a return Matchplay with them is already on the card. It’s a way of fostering cordial relationship between Golf Clubs in the country.

The two leaders praised the friendly atmosphere, even as they commended members for making the competition worthwhile.

The competition will be concluded tomorrow, Sunday July 13, 2025.
