His Royal Highness, Oba Olusola Idris Adebowale Lamidi-Osolo, Olofin Adimula of Ado-Odo speaks to sportsbash.com.ng on his enthusiasm for football, his pride in his daughter’s accomplishments, and his vision for the development of female football in Nigeria.
From attending matches at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan to supporting Gateway FC, the monarch shares how the sport brings him immense joy and relaxation.

Q: You attended the U-20 Female World Cup Qualifier at Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, where Nigeria triumphed over Rwanda 4-0, with your daughter, Olabiyi Falajomi Alaba, scoring the fourth goal and a solitary goal in Rwanda. How do you feel about this?
Firstly, I am exceedingly pleased with the team’s victory, as their success is of utmost importance. Additionally, I am delighted that, beyond scoring the final goal, she delivered an outstanding performance, having also scored the initial goal in Rwanda. Despite sustaining an injury after scoring both goals, I am gratified that the team succeeded in the second leg, with her contributing to the scoreline.
Q: You were in Ibadan alongside your Council of Chiefs. What are your thoughts on this?
It has become our tradition, as we are ardent admirers of football. Historically, we have consistently produced exceptional players, including Atanda Salihu, who played for Enyimba, winning the CAF Champions League before joining Al-Islamiy of Egypt and subsequently returning to Sunshine FC. Alaba has followed in his footsteps, setting a precedent for future generations. We take immense pride in her achievements and anticipate watching her play in Europe soon.
Q: Did you engage in football during your youth?
For a Kabiesi to travel far to attend a football match signifies a profound love for the sport. I also played football during my time at the Polytechnic, representing Lagos State Polytechnic in the Polytechnic Games. I played proficiently before assuming the role of a traditional ruler. Now, my responsibility is to support the younger generation in excelling in their chosen pursuits.
Q: What support have you provided to your daughter in her football career?
We have supported Alaba by instilling confidence in her, emphasizing that those playing top-flight football are not inherently superior. I have encouraged her to emulate Asisat Oshoala and, by the grace of God, she will surpass her record.
Q: Have you ever discouraged her from playing football because she’s female?
In the past, there was a perception that football players lacked seriousness. However, given her background, football is cherished in our community. We have our club, which attracts many spectators, and I believe she drew inspiration from that. We have never discouraged her; rather, we have consistently encouraged her dedication to the game.
Q: Alaba, your daughter won the league for Bayelsa Queens. How do you feel?
I was overjoyed when Alaba secured the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) title with Bayelsa Queens. I have pledged to mobilize my Chiefs to attend her matches whenever the team plays nearby. She has established a high standard in our community, and we pray for her continued success.
Q: Where do you envision your daughter in the future?
I aspire for her to play in Europe in the near future. As a Chelsea fan, I would be thrilled to see her join the Chelsea women’s team or other esteemed clubs such as Lyon, Frankfurt, or Bayern.
Q: Assess the development of female football in Nigeria and offer your advice to the coaching staff.
There is a predominant focus on male football, and we should prioritize dedication and the pursuit of more accolades to elevate the prominence of female football. I urge the government to extend the same level of support to female football that is provided to male football. I am confident that our female athletes can surpass their male counterparts.
Q: As a king, what advice would you offer to parents regarding the encouragement of their daughters’ participation in football?
I advise parents to encourage their daughters to engage in sports, particularly football. Participation in sports does not hinder their education. Parents should provide both financial and spiritual support to their daughters.
Q: Which team do you support in Nigeria, and how do you relax after daily activities?
I support Gateway FC and previously supported Enyimba FC when Atanda Salihu played for them. As a monarch from Ogun State, I wholeheartedly support the state team, Gateway United FC. I unwind by watching football, which provides me with immense relaxation and joy.
Q: How would you evaluate Governor Seyi Makinde’s contributions to sports development?
I am genuinely impressed by the governor’s initiatives, particularly his decision to host the tournament in Oyo State and his presence at the stadium. He has set an exemplary precedent for others to follow.
