Kwara dominates ‘Ileya Boxing Fury”, as sponsor expresses optimism



Kwara boxers on Monday dominated the one-day boxing tournament tagged “Ileya Boxing Fury”, held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Kwara State Stadium Complex, winning five of the twelve bouts featured.



Six states and the FCT participated in the tournament which, included Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Kano, Plateau states, host Kwara and the FCT.



Three exhibition bouts, 11 major bouts in different classes in the male category, and two bouts in the female category were features in the competition which drew large spectatorship.



In the female category, Kwara state lost the two bouts in the 44kg and 52 kg, as the duo of Nasirudeen Awawu and Ajibaye Suliat lost to Taofeek Eniola of Lagos and Ibraheem Ajoke of Osun state respectively.



In the male category, Kwara’s Mahmood Samad knocked out Ishola Gafar of Kano state in the 52kg,  Saheed Jamiu, who will soon turn professional boxer defeated Oladele Habeeb of the FCT in the 71kg, AbdulHameed Qodir recorded a split decision victory against Ajibade Aremu of Plateau state in the 53kg, while Abdulganiyu Yunus also knocked out Badmus Ayinla of Osun state in the 58kg. Another Kwaran, Yusuf Adams defeated Akorede Saheed in the 62kg class unanimously.



In the other bouts, Isiak Opeyemi of Plateau state recorded split decision victory against Abdulganiyu Akorede of Lagos state in the 40kg, Oke Daniel of Osun state lost on split decision to jimoh Waliyu of Kano state in the 54kg, Ahmed Sulaiman of Kwara state lost to Fakorede Adeyemi in unanimous decision of the three judges in the 60kg, while Hassan Friday of the FCT also lost to AbdulRahman Hassan of Kano state in the 64kg.



Equally, Folorunsho Olanrewaju of Lagos state and Ejiofor Chinedu of Oyo state knocked out the duo of Sikiru Tokunbo (FCT) and Hassan Olanrewaju (Lagos) in the 64kg and 67kg respectively.



Meanwhile, the sponsor of the event, Barrister Ahmed Musa Rufai, who is the Chairman of the Boxing Association expressed optimism that the tournament will further keep the boxers ready for any challenge, especially the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Delta state.
