The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter, under the leadership of Ayodeji Ismail, in partnership with Khadijat Toyin Musah (KTM) Foundation, has concluded plans to organise a one-day free medical outreach for members of the association.
The medical outreach is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 12, 2026 at the Taiwo Awoniyi Sports Media Centre, Kwara SWAN Secretariat, George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin beginning from 9am prompt.
Speaking on the development, Kwara SWAN Chairman described it as a watershed in the history of the association, noting that it will improve the health and wellbeing of the sports media professionals.
Ayodeji stated that the medical outreach is in line with the WSID-Four Point Agenda of the current administration, which includes welfare, training and oppurtunity for members, stakeholders engagement, innovation and creativity and transformational and inclusive leadership.
“This medical outreach is a watershed in the history of our association and we are very delighted its happening at this period”, stated the Chairman.
He explained that the need for the medical outreach has become imperative given the work loads and editorial targets placed on each journalists and its impact on their well being.
The Chairman said “media professionals often forget to prioritise their health status as they seek to meet deadlines and beat editorial targets, so, this medical outreach will provide them a unique oppurtunity to know the states of their health in respect to the demands of their work”
While stressing that prevention is better than cure, Ayodeji noted that the outreach will also help media professionals to better avoid activities that are inimical to their health through the medical check-ups and advices from the medical professionals.
The Chairman however, urged all the members of the association to seize the oppurtunity and be part of the exercise, noting that health is wealth.
The outreach is expected to cover several medical screenings including, blood pressure checks, blood sugar level testing, weight and height measurement to ascertain the body mass index, vision and hearing screenings with lifestyle and health discussions also to be delivered amongst other deliverables.
In her own reaction, the Founder of KTM Foundation, Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah, who is a Pioneer Professor of Nursing Science at the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa, descibed the partnership as groundbreaking and visionary.
The Ilorin-born distinguished scholar, who is also a strong promoter of cycling and former North Central representative on the Board of Cycling Federation of Nigeria, stated that sports media professionals play an integral role in the development of sports,hence the need for them to be medically fit.
“We are proud to be associated with Kwara SWAN to offer this free medical services. It is what we are known for and our team of medical professionals are also ready to deliver the best during the course of the programme” said Professor Musah, who also formerly Chaired Women the Grassroots Development Committee of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria.
Founded seven years ago, KTM Foundation’s core areas include health promotion, cancer awareness, maternal and child health, youth and women empowerment, girl-child initiatives, mentoring and sports development.
