The Nigeria National League (NNL) is set for the commencement of its 2026/2027 season on Sunday, November 1, with a high-profile opening fixture between former Nigerian champions, Heartland FC and Crown FC of Ogbomoso, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
Ahead of the new campaign, the Nigeria National League Club Owners and Managers Association (NALCOMA), led by its President, Anas Bamusa, has called on participating clubs, players, officials and other stakeholders to promote sportsmanship, mutual understanding and strict adherence to the rules and regulations governing the competition.
Bamusa urged all participating teams to embrace the spirit of fair play, discipline and healthy competition, stressing that the success of the new season would depend largely on the collective commitment of stakeholders to upholding the integrity of the league.
He commended the 36 participating clubs for their sacrifices, resilience and determination in keeping the league’s flag flying, despite the challenges associated with football administration and club management.
The NALCOMA President charged the clubs to make the 2026/2027 season worthwhile by demonstrating professionalism, discipline and a strong commitment to the development of Nigerian football.
He further emphasised the need for clubs to respect match officials, observe competition rules and maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect, noting that football should remain a unifying platform for sports development and youth engagement.
Meanwhile, the opening fixture between Heartland and Crown FC, scheduled for 4pm, is expected to attract prominent personalities in Nigerian football, with top officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expected to grace the occasion.
Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and its Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, have confirmed their readiness to attend the opening ceremony.
Also expected are the Acting General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, and former NNL Chairman, Chief George Aluo, whose presence is expected to add colour and significance to the occasion.
Their attendance underscores the growing attention being accorded the country’s second-tier league, widely regarded as the Most Important League in Nigeria because of its critical role in discovering, developing and providing opportunities for emerging football talents to progress to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
With 36 clubs preparing for the challenges of the new season, expectations are high for an exciting and competitive league that will showcase emerging talents, strengthen grassroots football and provide a pathway for clubs seeking promotion to the top flight.
As the new season gets underway, NALCOMA’s message remains clear: beyond the quest for points, promotion and glory, fair play, discipline, understanding and respect for the rules must remain the guiding principles of the competition.
