Kwara State has recorded its most impressive outing yet at the National Youth Games, clinching an unprecedented 44 medals under the watch of Director of Sports, Coach Ibrahim Oladele Bako, even as the state maintained its familiar fifth-place finish on the medals table.

At the 9th edition of the Games in Asaba, the Kwara contingent raked in 15 gold, 10 silver, and 19 bronze medals, a sharp leap from last year’s tally of 30 medals—12 gold, 7 silver, and 11 bronze.

For many observers, the result reflects the discipline, preparation, and motivation that defined the state’s campaign.

“The unprecedented medals won by Kwara show that sports officials did their job. There was great motivation for the athletes from Coach Bako,” noted Ilorin-based journalist Michael Odetunde, who covered the 10-day youth sports fiesta.

Bako’s leadership stood out in the absence of Kwara State Sports Commission Executive Chairman, Coach Bola Mogaji, who stayed back in Ilorin after securing a second term in office.

It was Bako who guided the athletes through the final lap of preparations, including a successful zonal elimination in Ilorin, before taking charge in Asaba.

His approach, journalists said, not only steadied the camp but also inspired young talents to punch above their weight in the face of stiff competition.

The Games themselves produced a major upset as Lagos surged to first place, dethroning perennial champions Delta, who had to settle for second.

Edo finished third, while Bayelsa claimed fourth.

For Kwara, the medal surge is a powerful signal that the state is on the rise in grassroots sports, even if the overall position on the log remains unchanged.

Officials say the lessons from Asaba will feed into long-term plans to break into the top three in future editions.

For now, Kwara celebrates consistency with clear signs of progress—and a coach whose quiet but firm leadership may have just set the tone for bigger sporting victories ahead.
