Jagunmolu Queens of Ogun State emerged champions of the First Lady Pre-Season Female Football Championship after a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Kwara United Queens, in a thrilling grand finale held at the George Innih Stadium.
The pulsating encounter lived up to expectations, drawing a large crowd of dignitaries, football enthusiasts, and stakeholders who witnessed a fiercely contested battle between both sides.
Despite dominating the first half, Kwara United Queens were left to rue missed opportunities, as Jagunmolu Queens’ resolute defence and outstanding goalkeeping kept them at bay.
Kwara United Queens came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions, hitting the woodwork three times. Tolu Omoniyi saw her effort crash against the base of the post, while Mariam Shittu’s lively runs on the flank forced a brilliant save. Adaize Ruth also had a close-range attempt spectacularly denied, compounding the hosts’ frustration.
Jagunmolu Queens, however, remained disciplined and compact, holding firm under pressure to force the match into penalties after a goalless regulation time. In the shootout, they displayed nerves of steel, converting their chances with precision to seal a 3-1 victory and lift the coveted trophy.
Earlier in the day, FUOYE Dazzlers secured third place after edging Wazbak Queens 6-5 in another dramatic penalty shootout.
For their triumph, Jagunmolu Queens were awarded ₦250,000, while runners-up Kwara United Queens received ₦200,000. FUOYE Dazzlers went home with ₦100,000 for finishing third.
The competition, organized by Ultimate Sports Consult in partnership with the Kwara State Sports Commission and Enact Innovation Hubs, is aimed at discovering grassroots talents and promoting the development of the girl child through sports.
Reacting to the success of the tournament, Engr. Nurudeen Adeyemi Balogun delivered an inspiring message, expressing deep satisfaction with the standard of play and the organization of the championship. He described the competition as a remarkable platform for showcasing young female football talents and reaffirmed the growing importance of women’s football in Nigeria.
Impressed by the quality displayed by the finalists, he noted that their technical discipline, tactical awareness, and resilience are clear signs of a bright future for the women’s game in the country.
