Former quarter-miler and Imo ’98 National Sports Festival gold medalist, Kayode Afolabi and Dr. Rofiat Dauda-Olajide of the Department of Human Kinetics, University of Ilorin, have been elevated to the positions of 1st Vice Chairman and 2nd Vice Chairman respectively, by the Kwara State Athletics Association.
The development came up last week in Ilorin, following the resignation of the longest-serving Chairman, Alhaji Tunde Abdulkareem, who threw in the towel for personal reasons, after clocking 70 years.
In a unanimous decision, the Board members elevated the two highly industrious and passionate ex-track and field athletes to support the new Chairman, Alhaji Issa Ore, who will now lead the team to drive athletics in Kwara State and beyond.
Kayode Afolabi, the senior brother of Olympic and Commonwealth medalist, Bisi Afolabi, told Sportspro News Publisher, Bayour Issah that the new responsibility will make him double his efforts to put Kwara athletics on the world map.
He called on all former athletes home and abroad from Kwara State to rally around the new leadership to change the face of track and return the state to the glory days, when Kwara state dominated the scenes under highly successful Coach Harrison Obiajulu Momoh.
Kayode Afolabi, a graduate of Statistics from the University of Ilorin, is also a trained coach, Athletics Analyst, and Chairman of the Kwara state chapter of the National Association of Athletics Officials (NAATO).
In her own comment, a University Don and renowned ex-international sprinter in her days, Dr. Rofiat Dauda-Olajide,who is the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Kwara State Athletics Association, appreciated the Board for considering her worthy to serve at the top level in the state.
She promised to offer her best to lift the athletes’ performance in their quest for podium position at all competitions.
