*Worry over detention of member

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria,
(SWAN) Kwara State Chapter have announced that the recently completed Secretariat will be named in honor of Taiwo Awoniyi, the prolific striker for Nottingham Forest and the Super Eagles, in recognition of his significant contributions to sports development in State and the nation as a whole.

This decision was among the resolutions made during the last Congress in 2024.

Furthermore, at the Congress, SWAN urged key stakeholders to address the situation of one of its members, Rowland Olonishuwa, who has been detained over an alleged defamation case involving a Commercial Bank.

As per the fifth resolution of the Congress, the sports writers’ body “put forward a proposal to formally designate the newly constructed Kwara SWAN Secretariat in honour of the Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, in appreciation of his role in ensuring the completion of the project.”

Regarding Olonishuwa’s case, the journalists expressed dismay at the prolonged detention of their colleagues, and called for prompt and peaceful resolution through dialogue.

In the communique released by SWAN at the conclusion of the Congress, the sports journalists praised the state government, under the leadership of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for including the renovation of the Lafiagi and Offa Stadia in the 2025 new year budget.

They also urged the government to ensure the execution of these upgrades once the budget is approved.
