The lawmaker representing Odo-Ogun constituency of Oyun local government in the Kwara state House of Assembly(KWHA), Honourable Yusuf Musa Atoyebi has vowed to sustain the sponsorhip of Oyun Unity Cup.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the maiden edition of the football competition today December, 20th at Ilemona LGEA Primary School, Atoyebi revealed that the tournament was put together to complement the efforts of the Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in youth and sports development..
The Chief Whip of KWHA noted that football is a kind of sports that bring the youth together and he believes the competition is going to help breed unity among them.
Noting that the Local Government Area had produced the Nigeria greatest striker in the past, late Rashidi Yekini who hails from Irra, he expressed optimism that initiative like the tournament will be sustained to afford the community the opportunity to unearth a new football icon.
The final match between Igosun United FC and Ipee United FC was a spectacle filled with great football artistry. The technical and tactical awareness demonstrated by the players made it an excitement-packed show.
Wasiu Raji from the spot in the 21st minutes had scored the opener for Igosun United, before Suleiman Jelili headed home the equalizer for Ipee United to drag the game into spot kick affairs after the due time.
Igosun United eventually won the game 6-5 on penalties, to clinch the coveted trophy.
Earlier, Unique Eleshinfunfun lost to Ultimate Football Academy 4-5 on penalties in the third place match, after playing out a goalless draw in the regulation time.
Quite rewarding, the winner of the championship went home with a cash prize of fifty thousand naira, with the runners-up taking home thirty thousand naira. The third place winner took home twenty thousand naira prize.
Guests at the event includes Kwara FA Chairman, Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa, represented by Offa FA Chairman, Alhaji Wasiu Lawal, Hon. Tajudeen Abioye and Hon.Taiye Olaniyi, APC Chairman Oyun Local Government Area.
