Alhaji Mohammed Haruna Maigidansanma has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist, Mallam Yusuf Feruke, describing his death as a monumental loss to the Nigerian sports fraternity and the journalism profession.
In a condolence message made available to journalists in Abuja, Alhaji Maigidansanma of the National Sports Commission said the late Feruke was a thoroughbred professional whose pen and principles contributed immensely to the growth of sports reporting in Nigeria.
According to Maigidansanma, who is the former Kwara Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Mallam Feruke’s passion, integrity, and commitment to factual journalism stood him out during a career that spanned several decades. He recalled that the deceased used his platform to promote unity, discipline, and development within the Nigerian sports ecosystem.
“Mallam Yusuf Feruke was not just a journalist; he was an institution in himself. His death is a great loss to the media, to sports development, and to everyone who values honest, insightful journalism,” Maigidansama said.
He noted that the late Feruke’s contributions went beyond reporting, as he also played a mentoring role to many young sports writers and served as a moral compass in the profession.
“I extend heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, the Kwara State Sports Commission and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), and the entire media community. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds, and grant him Aljannat Firdaus,”
he added.
Maigidansanma who was also the former General Manager of Kwara United, urged practicing journalists to emulate the late Feruke’s virtues of humility, dedication, and truthfulness, which, according to him, remain essential for the advancement of both sports and journalism in Nigeria.
A native of Kwara State, Mallam Yusuf Feruke began his journalism career in the 1980s and rose to prominence as one of Nigeria’s leading sports reporters.
He worked with several reputable media organizations, including The Herald Newspapers, where his insightful columns and objective analysis earned him national recognition.
Known for his calm disposition and deep knowledge of Nigerian football, Feruke covered major national and international sporting events and remained active in mentoring young journalists until his passing.
Mallam Yusuf Feruke was widely respected for his objective style of reporting and unwavering commitment to sports development. His demise, many believe, marks the end of an era in Nigerian sports journalism.
