The ancient city of Ilorin stood still in honour and gratitude as dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, family members and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the colourful retirement reception of Mallam Ibrahim Oladele Bako, a respected figure in the development of grassroots football in Kwara State.
The ceremony began with solemn morning prayers at his family home in Pakata, setting a spiritual tone for the day’s activities.
Islamic clerics, led by Alfa Mohammed Albarka offered heartfelt supplications, thanking Almighty Allah for a fulfilled career and seeking continued guidance, good health and long life for the celebrant. The atmosphere was serene yet emotional, as colleagues and protégés reflected on decades of service marked by discipline, integrity and unwavering commitment to youth development.
Also, the staffers of the Kwara State Sports Commission offered special prayers for Mallam Bako.
Mallam Bako, widely known for his pivotal role at the Kwara Football Academy in Ilorin and a Director at the Kwara State Sports Commission, was described by speakers as a bridge-builder and mentor whose contributions extended beyond the pitch.
The event hall later transformed into goodwill messages, underscoring the deep affection and respect he commands within the sports community.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Magaji, lauded Mallam Bako as a consummate sports administrator whose legacy would endure for generations.
He noted that the growth and stability of football structures in the state owed much to Bako’s administrative foresight and moral discipline. According to him, retirement from active service does not equate to retirement from impact, urging the celebrant to remain a guiding light for the younger generation.
He added that Bako’s dual responsibilities at KFA and the Sports Commission were demanding, but his discipline, coordination, and commitment made the work seamless.
“All the encomiums Bako is receiving today are also an advantage to me. If I nominate someone and he disappoints, I’ll be blamed. But Bako has performed beyond expectations,” Magaji said.
Sir Prince Oladimeji Ladi Thompson, in his tribute, described Mallam Bako as “a silent achiever who allowed his work to speak louder than his voice.” He commended his humility, transparency and fatherly disposition, stressing that the academy’s success stories across Nigeria and beyond bear the imprint of his dedication.
Mallam Bako was the Secretary of Kwara United Football Club when Prince Oladimeji was Chairman.
Alhaji Shuaib Akanbi Òkè, who was the Permanent Secretary of the then Ministry of Sports when Mallam Bako was there, highlighted the celebrant’s steadfastness during challenging times, recalling moments when difficult decisions were taken in the overall interest of sports development in Kwara State.
He described Mallam Bako as a man of principle who never compromised standards, even under pressure.
Dr. Bode Durotoye, visibly moved, spoke about the celebrant’s mentorship and rare ability to nurture raw talents into refined professionals. He emphasized that Mallam Bako’s retirement marks the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter where his wealth of experience would continue to serve the state in advisory capacities.
Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka, the Nwachigoziri 1, in his goodwill message, applauded the celebrant’s inclusive leadership style. He noted that Mallam Bako created opportunities for youths from diverse backgrounds, fostering unity and healthy competition through sports.
According to him, the celebrant’s life stands as a testament to selfless service and dedication.
Kwara Football Academy emerged champions of the competition staged as part of the reception for Mallam Bako, tagged ‘Ibrahim Bako U13 Championship’ after defeating Vision Football Academy 3–1 on penalties following a goalless draw at regulation time.
The keenly contested final, played before an enthusiastic gathering of football stakeholders across Kwara State, lived up to expectations as both sides displayed discipline, tactical awareness, and remarkable composure. Despite several scoring opportunities created by both teams, neither side could find the breakthrough in regulation time, forcing the encounter into a penalty shootout.
In the ensuing shootout, the Young Dragons of Kwara Football Academy demonstrated nerves of steel, converting three of their spot kicks to secure a 3–1 victory over Vision Football Academy and clinch the prestigious trophy.
The victory signals a promising new chapter for the Academy, as the newly appointed Administrator, Mr. Tajudeen Wale Obalola, celebrated his first trophy in office just days after officially resuming duty. The triumph is widely seen as an early boost for his administration and a positive sign for the future of the Academy.
It also marked the last of the numerous trophies won by the Academy under the leadership of Mallam Bako.
Earlier in a Novelty match, members of staff of the Kwara State Sports Commission defeated their Kwara Football Academy counterparts 4-2 on penalties.
The reception ended on a high note, with presentation of gifts, as various associations and groups, including the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Kwara chapter, led by Mallam Ayodeji Ismail, presented plaques of Honour to the celebrant.
Responding, Mallam Bako expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah, his family, colleagues and the Kwara sports community for their support throughout his career.
He reflected on the journey with humility, acknowledging both the triumphs and challenges, and urged stakeholders to sustain the vision of grassroots sports development.
Mallam Bako’s retirement may mark the conclusion of official duties, but his legacy in sports administration will continue to inspire generations to come.
