Kwara United Football Club may chose Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja as venue for their home game in the 2025/2026 CAF Confederation Cup competition, following the decision of the Africa football controlling body to approve only two stadiums in Nigeria.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved just two stadiums in Nigeria to host matches for the 2025/26 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja were the only venues to meet CAF’s infrastructure and facility standards.
This decision means all four Nigerian representatives, Remo Stars, Rivers United, Kwara United and Abia Warriors will have to share the approved grounds for their home fixtures.
With both tournaments running concurrently, fixture scheduling and pitch management will be critical as the clubs navigate their continental campaigns.
South Africa tops the list of the highest stadiums approved in Africa, with 13. Others are Morocco (10), Algeria (9), Ivory Coast (6), Cameroon (5), Egypt (5), Mali (5), (DR Congo (3) and Equatorial Guinea (3).
Among the venues approved are Uganda (3), Tunisia (3), Ethiopia (2), Libya (2), Rwanda (2), Tanzania (2), Zambia (2), Senegal (2), while three countries have one each. They are Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar.
Meanwhile, Kwara United returned to winning ways at the ongoing ValueJet Preseason Tournament, defeating Ikorodu City 3-2 in their second game of the campaign.
They lost their first game 1-2 to Remo Stars FC.
The Harmony Boys took the lead in the 27th minute when Saheed Olaniyi converted from the spot, after Wasiu Jimoh was brought down in the box.
Alao Mohammed doubled the advantage with a brilliant solo effort, showing composure and precision in front of goal, and in the 77th minute, Babatunde Bright made it 3–0, netting his second goal to put Kwara United firmly in control.
Ikorodu City fought back, scoring twice, including a penalty, to set up a tensed atmosphere.
However, Kwara United goalkeeper, Ayeleso Suraj was the hero between the sticks, saving a penalty in the first half and stopping another effort before the referee ordered a retake.
Head coach Tunde Sanni praised his players’ effort but noted areas for improvement:
“We will continue to work hard and address all loopholes ahead of the NPFL season,” he said.
Kwara United will next face Abia Warriors as they continue their preseason preparations.
