Int’l Para Badminton tourney: Nigeria wins one gold, two bronze medals

Two Kwara State badminton players, Bolaji Eniola Mariam and Nnanna Chigozie Jeremiah have won one gold and two bronze medal for Nigeria at the just concluded Uganda International Para Badminton Championship held in Kampala.

In the Women’s Singles SL3 final, Bolaji Eniola of Nigeria beat Sanjana Kumari of India two straight sets (2-0) to clinch the gold medal in the Class.

Bolaji Eniola Mariam won gold medal in Women’s Singles SL3 Class, Chigozie Jeremiah won bronze medal in Men’s Singles SL4 Class, while Olanipekun Gbenga Sunday won the third bronze medal in Men’s Singles SL3 Class, making it one gold and two bronze medal for Nigeria.

Five players represented Nigeria at the Championship while Chigozie Jeremiah was sponsored by  Badminton Confederation of Africa BCA and Eniola Mariam on her part was given only accommodation by BCA with the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih providing the ticket. 

Meanwhile, another three players and the National Para Badminton Coordinator sponsored by the Abia State Government will be leaving the Country today for the All Africa Para Badminton Championship billed to start on Tuesday, and end on Sunday at the same venue in Uganda.

In his reaction, the Technical Director, Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Coach Tunde Kazeem congratulated the team and their handler, Coach Olasunkanmi Adewale on behalf of the federation for a job well done and hoping for more gold medals as the All Africa begins on Tuesday.

Coach Tunde Kazum also urged the players not to relent in their quest to raise the name of the Nation higher.
