Kwara United Football Club this evening defeated Shooting Stars Sports Club on penalties, to win this year’s Governor Dapo Abiodun Pre-Season football tournament concluded at Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.
The win also means that Kwara United FC has broken the Ibadan based team’s stronghold on the trophy, having won the last three editions.
Kwara United FC lost their very first match of the campaign 1-0 to the newly promoted Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, but bounced back to contention with wins over Ijebu United and Gateway United, to end the group as leaders.
The team defeated another NPFL side, Sunshine Stars, to come face to face with Shooting Stars Sports Club.
Kwara United FC lost the advantage of taking the lead in the highly explosive encounter this evening, as the game finally ended in a goalless draw.
Kwara United FC went ahead to win the game 5-4 on penalties, to emerge the new champions of the competition being sponsored by Bet9ja and Valuejet
The competition is an initiative of Otunba Tade Azeez, President Nigeria Referees Association.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of Kwara United FC, Bashir Badawiy has said that the team will continue with it’s preparation ahead of the 2021/2022 NPFL season, with another pre-season tournament.
Speaking after Kwara United FC defeated Shooting Stars Sports Club to win the Governor Dapo Abiodun Pre-season tournament today in Ijebu-Ode, Badawiy said that the team will work hard to surpass last season’s records in the league.
He thanked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support to the team, even as he commended the players and coaches, for winning the trophy.
