Kwara State First Lady, Ambassador Professor (Dr) Mrs Olufolake Ajike AbdulRazaq has been commended for encouraging the development and empowerment of girl-child, especially through sports.

The General Manager of Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Kwara, Alhaji Tajudeen Kayode Aremu made the commendation after watching some of the matches of the ongoing 2nd First Lady six-a-side female football competition, at the State Stadium Complex, Ilorin Wednesday.

Alhaji Aremu, who watched some of the matches alongside the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu said that the competition will soon blosom to a national phenomenon.

“Playing a competition of this magnitude in honour of the First Lady is well deserving, owing to Her Excellency’s tremendous activities in terms of support for women and girl-child. With time, the competition will grow big, and will gradually be a national phenomenon.

Six schools and six clubs are battling for honours in the competition which comes to a close on Saturday, when the final in the two categories will be played.

Alhaji Aremu described the competition as developmental, been a grassroots tournament, and timely, as most of the league players will use the opportunity to train and learn one or two things, as they are now on break.

While also commending the state government for encouraging sports development, Alhaji Aremu charged the girls to take their education very serious, in the pursuit of taking football as a career.

“Government has been doing a lot, and apart from education, when you have this type of opportunity, its going to lure them away from social vices, give them employment and empowerment, which at the long run, adds value to the society.

While tasking the parents to encourage their girl-child to take advantage of the opportunity and any other windows of opportunities, Alhaji Aremu praised the Organiser, Hajia Segilola Alaya, who is the Chairperson of the Kwara State Football Association Female Football Development Committee, for her efforts.

The finals in the two categories will hold tomorrow, Saturday February 10, 2024, at the Kwara State Stadium Complex, Ilorin.
