Family, friends, colleagues and the sporting community will today, Wednesday July 29, 2026, gather to celebrate the birthday of Alhaji Mohammed Haruna Maigidansama Ilerika.
They will not only be honouring a distinguished sports administrator but also a visionary leader whose contributions have left an enduring imprint on sports development in Kwara State and Nigeria.
Over the years, Maigidansama has built a reputation as a youth advocate, peace ambassador and accomplished football administrator whose passion for grassroots development has transformed lives and institutions.
Before attaining national prominence, he served meritoriously as the Kwara State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and later as Secretary of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Kwara State, where he dedicated himself to discovering and nurturing young talents while promoting youth empowerment through sports.
His defining moment in football administration came following the relegation of Kwara United Football Club from the Nigeria Premier League at the end of the 2012/2013 season.
Faced with the enormous responsibility of rebuilding the club, the Kwara State Government entrusted Maigidansama with the task, appointing him as the first-ever General Manager of Kwara United FC.
The assignment was daunting, but his determination, strategic planning and exceptional leadership quickly changed the fortunes of the club.
Within a short period, he successfully guided Kwara United back to the elite division by securing promotion from the Nigeria National League, restoring hope and pride to thousands of football-loving Kwarans.
He was a Board member of Kwara State Football Association during Emmanuel Dada Obafemi led Executives, in the year 2000 during the regime of Governor Mohammed Alabi Lawal.
Perhaps one of his most enduring legacies came on May 22, 2015, when he officially unveiled a new identity for the club. Under his leadership, the long-standing nickname “Afonja Warriors” gave way to the now-famous “Harmony Boys,” a name that has since become synonymous with Kwara United across Nigeria and beyond.
The rebranding exercise also introduced a fresh club image, including new jerseys and a change of kit manufacturer, signalling a new era for the club.
However, Maigidansama’s impact extended far beyond branding.
Convinced that sustainable success could only come through youth development, he established the “Next Generation” initiative, a programme designed to identify, groom and integrate promising young footballers into the senior team.
Today, the success of numerous players who rose through the initiative to become an important figure for Kwara United, remains a testament to the programme’s effectiveness.
His administration also made history by introducing sign-on fees for members of the club’s Feeders Team, the first time such welfare incentives were extended to the young players.
Alongside their monthly stipends, the initiative significantly boosted morale and reaffirmed his commitment to investing in the future of football in Kwara State.
Beyond administration and player development, Maigidansama distinguished himself as a promoter of peace.
At a time when rivalry between supporters of ABS Ilorin FC and Kwara United FC often generated tension, he worked diligently to foster unity and mutual respect between both fan bases. His diplomatic approach and inclusive leadership helped eliminate clashes during his tenure, creating a more peaceful football environment in the state.
Another landmark achievement during his administration was the successful registration of Kwara United Football Club with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), providing the club with a stronger institutional and legal foundation for future growth.
His expertise eventually earned him national appointments. He served with distinction as Secretary General of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) before moving on to the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), where he contributed significantly to the administration and development of both sports.
As Alhaji Mohammed Haruna Maigidansama Ilerika marks another milestone, his remarkable journey remains an inspiration to sports administrators, youth leaders and football stakeholders across the country.
His legacy is reflected not only in Kwara United’s successful return to the top flight, the enduring “Harmony Boys” identity and the structures he helped establish, but also in the many young athletes whose careers blossomed because he believed in their potential.
On this special occasion, the sporting family celebrates a man of vision, service and excellence, a leader whose contributions will continue to resonate for generations.
